PCKA Headquarters - West Lafayette, IN
PC Krause and Associates (PCKA) was incorporated in the state of Indiana in 1983. After the successful completion of several small task-ordered contracts with government agencies and Midwest utilities, PCKA was starting to become recognized as an up-and-coming consulting company with highly-talented engineers. This coupled with the advent of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program provided the opportunity for PCKA to widen its customer base. In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, it became apparent that PCKA could no longer meet the volume of business it was generating with part-time employees. This was the turning point and since the mid 1990’s, PCKA has sustained steady growth to where it is now a $5M a year business with 14 full-time PhD’s with offices in the Purdue Research Park in West Lafayette, Indiana and in Dayton, Ohio. It is a high-tech company with a concentration of high-level expertise in the dynamics of electromechanical systems with particular emphasis on power-electronic-based systems of the types to be found in advanced aircraft, ships, and ground vehicles. Although SBIR/STTR funding has been very important in the evolution of PCKA and the opening of the doors to non-SBIR sources of funding, currently, SBIR/STTR grants make up only about a 1/3 of PCKA’s annual net income. PCKA supports several programs and research initiatives for the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in Dayton Ohio and works with/for other government agencies and numerous industries. The company has a well-established reputation for solving engineering challenges through the use of advanced modeling, simulation, analysis, and control techniques. PCKA’s Engineering Services Division develops and transitions advanced technologies to meet the needs of government and industry programs. The company’s Computer Services and Software Products Division provides research and development of tools and simulation technologies necessary to conveniently analyze and optimize the engineering challenges identified by the Engineering Services Division. It also supports the commercial deployment of developed software for any products which are deemed to have sufficient market interest beyond the needs of the Engineering Services Division. Both divisions share the primary goal of reducing product development risk and cost for customers. The Team contains information regarding the Officers, Directors, Business Manager, and other employees.
Research and Development
PCKA has successfully used the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program to establish proof of concept and to develop products in the areas of software, electric machine design, system optimization and stability, and advanced control of power based electromechanical systems. The advent of the SBIR program provided the opportunity for PCKA to widen its customer base. Since the mid 1980’s PCKA has had 18 SBIR/STTR Phase I Awards, three are on-going; 13 Phase II Awards, five are on-going; eight Phase III Awards, one is on-going. PCKA has subcontracted to universities and industries on several of these awards and PCKA has been a subcontractor to other small businesses on their SBIR/STTR projects.
The website organizes SBIR/STTR contracts into the categories: Power System, Thermal Systems, and Prognostics and Health Management. Abstracts on these projects can be obtained by navigating to these sections and clicking on the project title. In order to honor inplace NDA’s, the SBIR subcontractors are not listed as well as the research/development that PCKA is doing for companies. In some cases, additional information regarding projects can be obtained through the contact form.
